From a Nigerian to Prof. Soyinka

“Our common sense is totally lost. I am embarrassed sometimes that I occupy the same nation space with some people… what is the right of any Nigerian to challenge me on my decision? Barbarians have taken over, the country using the anonymity of the internet”. -Prof. Wole Soyinka BUT didn’t an erudite professor, renowned scholar, iconic playwright and social critic, who publicly threatened to destroy his document, however way it was acquired, over the outcome of a distant periodic election, he did not even vote and for which his interest is at best marginal, brutally assault common sense, that the rest of us, should be embarrassed to share the same nation space with him? Since Professor Wole Soyinka interjected prior to the anger-driven US presidential election with a threat to shred his own green card in the event of an election victory of the Republican Candidate, Mr. Donald Trump, he has set off a frenzy of activities in the social media. That such a towering figure as Prof. Soyinka who is familiar with real theatre could set off such theatrics as he did with a threat to tear his green card over an election outcome and expect nothing less than the frenzy that trailed it, is very strange indeed. He did not utter philosophy for which he should expect measured and rational response. In my part of the country, we say that when you bring home an ant infested wood, you have only invited lizards to feast. It is only natural and a matter of common sense that Nigerians are entitled to know how the distinguished professor has fared in his public threat to shred his card, after Mr. Donald Trump, the Republican candidate secured the requisite electoral college votes (more than 270) to win the U.S Presidential election. The anger and name calling that the professor has deployed to intimidate his interlocutors does not answer the question of his categorical statement to shred his green card in the event of Mr. Trump’s win. If the professor had been led, like Pastor T.B Joshua to believe the establishment media and polls projections of a victory for the Democratic Party candidate, Hillary Clinton, into the volatile gamble, there is actually no big deal in a humble climb down. After all, the assorted community of media and poll watchers, who predicted that Mr. Trump would be dumped in electoral humiliation, have since moved on, inventing fresh reasons for their dull binoculars that did not see more accurately the election permutations. Mr. Trump’s meteoric rise and consequent stunning victory is not so much about him but represents a considerably prevailing social sentiment in the US, to which he masterfully aggregated and articulated. The American traditional political elite or the Washington establishment has projected power in a way, in which the country has over-reached itself and also, the brutal effects of the financialisation of capitalism has taken huge toll on the working people, even as the traditional safety net has imploded. The consequent vulnerability of the working class, who have been previously protected through the gains of the US global accumulation process, guaranteed by Washington’s imperialist plunder and wars, felt left in cold.

Two things stand out to the traditional working class and the young people as prospective culprits for America’s domestic woes. They are cheap imports, for which globalisation and particularly, China is blamed. The other culprit is immigration, in which immigrants are held responsible for pulverizing jobs through provision of their cheap labour that render the traditional white working class highly uncompetitive. Besides, the alleged stealing of U.S jobs, immigrants are alleged to perpetrate violence and this is not withstanding, the violence perpetrated against the original American aborigines, the Red Indians, who were not only, nearly decimated by their earlier guests but leaves currently in squalor in the segregated reserve areas. To this prevailing sentiment of hostility to immigrations and globalisation, Mr. Trump, a political outsider who has made fortune in real estate business lent acerbic demagoguery, denouncing globalisation and making promise to put America first. He accused China of manipulating its currency to ferry its exports cheaply to the United States. He drew attention that the excessive U.S security muscle is pushing the working and middle class to bankruptcy, wondering why richer nations like Japan, Saudi Arabia and even Washington- NATO’s partners in Europe cannot pick the bulk of the security bills or even construct their own security umbrella On immigration, railing against Mexican neighbours as rapists and petty thieves, with a promise to construct wall along the Southern border, in which Mexico will pay fitted to the mass hysteria against immigration. With a persona, as theatrical as own Prof. Soyinka, Mr. Trump tapped into the overflowing red blood of Americas tribal politics. His possible enlightened antidote was the amiable Vermont senator, Mr. Bernie Sanders, the Democratic party aspirant, who had a meteoric rise until was cut short, as was latter revealed by the establishment of his own party, who preferred a notorious Washington wheeler-dealer, Mrs. Hillary Clinton, who fell an easy prey to the anti-establishment populist insurgency. As Mr. Trump, Senator Bernie Sanders inspired a faith-like followership, but without the bigotry and hate-filled vituperations of Mr. Trump’s “deplorable” as Mrs. Clinton called them. The mostly young Americans who championed the cause of the 71 year old “Democratic Socialist”, as Mr. Sanders called himself were believers in the international system, in which the U.S would fully participate but without the imperialist wars and over hyped security concerns that is in itself , at the root of international insecurity. Mr. Sander’s core promise was to revise the U.S excessively rigged capitalism, in which a one percent U.S corporate oligarchy and their political allies sit atop nearly 70 percent of the national wealth. He knew that what ails America and leaves her working class vulnerable is not global trade but corporate greed and elite avarice that elevates the dollars beyond its value and its consequent deification as the sole international currency of exchange. The fact is that in the face of over-sized corporate America and blushful and arrogant Washington elite, the ordinary America hemorrhages in deepening social and economic exclusion. It is in this context that U.S presidential election last November provided Americans with two stark choices of anti-immigration, anti globalisation –right wing populism or elaborate and inclusive national social reform with considerable reduction in Washington international belligerence. When once, the second option was eliminated by the manipulation of the Democratic Party that abruptly ended senator Sanders great run, Mr. Trump was left alone in the field to chatter and bluster his way to the presidency. That he largely sold dummy to his angry voters will become clear in the coming months and years. So how, did Prof. Soyinka failed to grasp this unfolding scenario prior to the U.S election and rather interjected with the drama of shredding his green card, except the outcome of the polls produced his preferred candidate. If he had left hard analysis to make light of an unfolding serious social issue by investing it with the drama of a theatre, why is he bemoaning his stalking “mutants” as he chose to denounce his traducers for following him through drama line Even as a national treasure, which all of us are, in different ways, Prof. Soyinka has no immunity to been interrogated on questions he has raised or decisions he has taken in the public square, no matter how intimately personal, it is.

UMUAHIA—POLICEMEN in Abia State have rescued a four-year-old boy, Obinna Ozuoba, from child traffickers. They arrested two suspects, one Rowland Egbe, 30, and a 50-year-old woman, Mrs. Chioma Ohajinmmadu, suspected to be the boy’s would-be buyer.
The boy, who was lured with biscuits, has been reunited with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Uzoma Ozuoba. According to Abia State Police Commissioner, Mr. Leye Oyebade, who paraded the suspects at the Police Officers Mess, weekend, Rowland Egbe was arrested at Obehie in Ukwa West Council, while taking the abducted boy to the would-be buyer.
Oyebade said on interrogation, the suspect admitted that he abducted the boy. He then led the police to 16, Uchelekwa Street by Ohanku Road, Aba, where Chioma was arrested.
The police commissioner, who described child trafficking as a “crime against humanity,” vowed that his men would fight the cartel until they were conquered. He urged persons interested in adopting children to follow legal process. Confession According to Egbe, he had earlier sold a female child to Chioma through a middle-man, and he was paid N50,000 out of the agreed price of N150,000.
However, Chioma wanted a male child, hence his attempt to take Obinna to the middle-man and collect the balance of the agreed price.
He said that he knew the boy’s parents and the boy knew him, which was why he easily followed Egbe. According to the female suspect, Chioma, she approached Egbe through the middle-man, now on the run. She said she has only female children and was desirous of having a male child.

2017 budget’ll end Nigeria’s economic woes – Buhari

ABUJA—President Muhammadu Buhari last night expressed optimism that the proposed 2017 budget would not end the current economic recession facing Nigeria but would also shoot the country into economic prosperity.

President Muhammadu Buhari presides over October 12 ,2016 Federal Executive Council meeting.

He also enjoined Nigerians not to be deterred by the reality of the

“temporary challenges” but should be strengthened by them. The encouragement were the highlights of the president’s address to Nigerians on the occasion of 2016 Eid-el-maulud celebrations today. Meanwhile, the president who wished Nigerians especially muslims a happy Eid-el-maulud celebration is billed to lay the budget estimates before a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday.
The address read in full: “Dear Compatriots, again the calendar of life has brought us into another period of celebration, and deep reflection. Celebration, because we are marking the birth of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him), and deep reflection, because it is another opportunity of pausing, taking a deep breath and reflecting on the current realities before us.
“First of all, I wish all Muslims a happy and memorable celebration of the birth of the great Prophet, through whose teachings, particularly on peaceful living, tolerance, sobriety, generosity, sacrifice and honesty, and wisdom, the nation has gained immensely in building a harmonious and prosperous society. “The universal truths of the Prophet’s values remain unchanged.
“Against all odds, we have used these pillars of strength in securing a just and fair society, and our efforts are beginning to yield dividends in curbing terrorism, corruption and other crimes that devalue our humanity.
“The reality of the temporary challenges should not undermine our hope, reverse our collective will to succeed, or divide us; rather it should remind us of why we need to stay together, fight together and succeed together. “As we look forward to 2017 with hope and huge expectations, let me assure you that with collective dedication and hard work, we will overcome the mountain of economic difficulties, and return our country to the path of prosperity.”

DSS arrest wanted Boko Haram member that carried out UN Abuja building bombing

DSS arrest wanted Boko Haram member that carried out UN Abuja building bombing

The Department of State Security DSS have arrested a notorious member of the Boko Haram terrorists, Khalid AL-Barnawi, alias Kafuri/ Naziru/ Alhaji Yahaya/Mallam Dauda/Alhaji Tanimu.

A statement by the spokesman for the DSS, Tony Opuiyo‎, says Khalid AL-Barnawi was apprehended on April 1st in Lokoja, Kogi State, while hiding under a false cover.

AL-BARNAWI was a founding member of the Jama’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid Da’wah Wa’l-Jihad (Boko Haram) and later the Amir of the break-away faction, Jama’at Ansarul Muslimim Fi Biladi Sudan (JAMBS). Khalid AL-BARNAWI is a trained terrorist commander, who has been coordinating terrorist activities in Nigeria, while talent-spotting and recruiting vulnerable young and able Nigerians for terrorist training by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in North African States and the Middle-East.

He was involved in many terrorist attacks in States of the Federation, including Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Sokoto and FCT-Abuja. This resulted in the killing and maiming of innocent citizens of this Country. ALBARNAWI is also responsible for the bombing of the United Nations building in Abuja, on 26th August, 2011; the kidnapping of two European civil engineers in Kebbi State in May, 2011, and their subsequent murder in Sokoto State; the kidnap of a German engineer, Edgar RAUPACH in January, 2012, the kidnap and murder of seven expatriate staff of Setraco Construction Company at Jama’are, in Bauchi State in February, 2013, the attack of Nigerian troops at Okene in Kogi State, while on transit to Abuja for an official assignment.

He would soon be charged to Court to face his charges after investigation is completed. In another development, the Service has uncovered the heinous role played by members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), in the abduction/kidnap of five Hausa-Fulani residents, namely Mohammed GAINAKO, Ibrahim MOHAMMED, Idris YAKUBU, and Isa Mohammed RAGO at Isuikwuato LGA in Abia State.

The abducted men were later discovered at the Umuanyi forest, Abia State, where they were suspected to have been killed by their abductors and buried in shallow graves, amidst fifty (50) other shallow graves of unidentified persons.

Arrest and investigation conducted so far, revealed that elements within the IPOB, carried out this dastardly action. It is pertinent therefore to alert the general public that IPOB, is gradually showing its true divisive colour and objectives, while steadily embarking on gruesome actions in a bid to ignite ethnic terrorism and mistrust amongst non-indigenes in the South-East region and other parts of the country. Following this act, tension is currently rife among communal stakeholders in the State with possibilities of spillover to other parts of country.

DSS warns that the Service will not hesitate to act decisively within its statutory mandate to ensure that the sponsors and perpetrators of this action are apprehended and prosecuted for their crime. Tony OPUIYO DSS, Abuja. 9th April, 2016

LAUTECH ASUU cautions institution owners against poor funding April 1, 2016

LAUTECH ASUU cautions institution owners against poor funding April 1, 2016 The Academic Staff Union of Universities Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso branch has condemned the lackadaisical attitude of the institutions two owner states on the release of subventions to the institution. The Union said it owes the general public the painful truth on the state of affairs at LAUTECH, most especially the abdication of responsibilities by the visitors in providing subventions and capital grants to the University. The observations were part of resolutions at the union’s congress held on Tuesday. The Union also said that the non-release of subvention for a total of 17 months (12 and 5 months owned by Osun and Oyo respectively) till date has constituted a serious clog in the wheel of progress of the institution. “The unsustainable payment of salaries through Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) is seriously affecting other activities of the institution which are not supposed to be compromised under any guise,” the union said in a statement signed by its Chairperson, Dr. ‘Biodun Olaniran. “Non-release of subventions has led to backlog of various allowances namely Earned Academic Allowances and promotion arrears because IGR that was supposed to be used for these allowances were been diverted to pay staff salaries.” The union lamented that the academic staff are made to work under increased lecturer/ student ratio and other unfavourable conditions to ensure uninterrupted academic sessions for the management to be able to meet up with payment of salaries which is not only delayed but also irregular and unreliable and not so forthcoming. “The Governing Council, which is supposed to help the situation by facilitating the necessary means of getting the owner states to be more alive to their responsibility, is not helping matters, as all efforts by the Union to get the council on its feet, in this regard, are to no avail,” Dr. Olaniran said
