Five Ways to Improve your Saving Habit

The first step to improving your savings habit is to honestly assess your financial health. After all, you can’t solve a problem if you don’t know what it is. Improving your savings habit will help you reach your short- and long- term financial goals. Before you can save, you need to develop a clear picture of your expenses and your income.

This will help you work out if you are spending more than you actually earn and help you to fix the situation by reducing your expenses – remember it really is easier to cut down expenses than it is to make more money.

No matter what you’re saving for – whether it’s for retirement, a new home or a new car, or just to cultivate a habit of savings - it’s important to start early. When it comes to saving, the best time to start is now.

There are five (5) steps that will help you start saving:
First, come up with a personal budget or monthly spending plan. This will help you plan for expenses, reduce excess spending, save for future goals, have money put aside for emergencies and prioritize savings. Separate your income and expenses but make sure that you update your budget regularly as these figures may change from time to time. Your income will include things like your salary, bonuses, retirement income (if you have retired), income from rents and things like that. Your expenses may be food and water, housing, clothes, transportation, education, utilities (such as phone bills, electricity, internet and such) and personal (such as hair and personal care).  Once you have estimated how much you will earn and spend, subtract your expenses from your income. If you have money left over, you can then decide how to spend, save or invest this left over money. If your expenses are more than your income, however, you must adjust your budget by reducing your expenses.
Second, set realistic savings goals. Know what it is you are saving for and how much you need to save to achieve that goal. Make sure that the amount you are saving is meaningful but doable.
Three, pay attention to your lifestyle; manage lifestyle inflation. Most of us will spend more money if we have more money to spend. As we move up in our careers, we tend to spend more. This is known as lifestyle inflation. Lifestyle inflation works against our ability to save and invest. You must remember that every extra naira spent now, is less money in the bank. People tend to spend more because they want to be and appear like other people – neighbours, friends, even family. But you must remember that these people may owe a lot of money for them to live the kind of life that they live. You need to decide whether you want to join these people in a life of debt or save to secure our families’ futures and our retirement.
Fourthly, understand the difference between needs and wants. “Needs” are things that you must have in order to survive, such as food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, transportation and such. On the other hand, “wants” are things you would like to have, but that you do not necessarily need for survival. Sometimes it is difficult, especially these days, to tell the difference between the two but you must honestly do this if you want to manage your spending and save.
Lastly, explore savings accounts. The easiest way to save is to put the money in a savings account. Try as much as possible not to touch the money you save. To make sure that you do not touch this money you can put it in a high yield savings or investment account that has higher interest rates. Since your money must stay in the account for a period of time, this will help you to resist any temptation to touch it.
These tips are really simple and if you stick to them, you should see an improvement in your savings. Zoning of National Assembly offices: APC leaders' meeting end in deadlock

A meeting of top members of APC convened to resolve all disagreements bordering on the zoning of top offices in the incoming National Assembly ended in a deadlock on at the Rivers state Governors lodge Abuja on Wednesday April 22nd.

According to Vanguard, the meeting came to a deadlock after the leaders failed to reach a consensus on where to zone the office of the speaker of the House of Representatives. The members were divided between zoning it to the North-East and South-West. The leaders however agreed on the zoning of the office of Senate President to the North-Central and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, to the South-East.

Sources say outgoing minority leader, Femi Gbajabiamila and Yakubu Dogara are being nominated for either speaker or deputy speaker of the House of Representatives. In attendance at the meeting were President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd); Vice-President-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; party leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; governors-elect, senators-elect as well as some top executive officers of the party.

Hold on to your praises, I don't need them - Tinubu tells Kashamu

APC Chieftain, Chief Bola Tinubu has released a statement calling on the Ogun state Senator-elect, Buruji Kashamu to hold on to his praises as he does not need them. Recall that Chief Buruji had in a open letter last week called the former Governor his role model and the architect of modern day democracy and asked for them to collaborate for the upliftment of the yorubaland even though they are from different political parties.
Tinubu in a statement released by his media aide, Segun Dada yesterday April 21st, said Buruji who worked with other PDP members to produce a defamatory document against him, Gen Buhari and other APC members cannot all of a sudden begin to sing his praises. He asked the politician to make a trip to the US first as a Senator elect before he, Tinubu, can associate with him. Choi. These politicians. Read the statement after the cut...

The statement in part reads; "The days of false adulation are gone in Nigerian politics. Fake praise singers like Kashamu will find that their particular craft is no longer in vogue. During this election cycle, their practice has dramatically turned from the way things are to how things used to be. Politicians will no longer be able to change direction and loyalties as if they were changing clothes. Those in politics must know that responsibility and accountability shall now follow them. One can no longer walk both sides of the street at the same time. In case Kashamu has not noticed, the politics of principle defeated the politics of posturing. Kashamu may be prodigal but he is no political son of Tinubu. Kashamu’s political lineage tracks to people like Bode George and President Jonathan. He should direct his encomiums to these men who are his true role models. They need his contrived affections more than Tinubu does. This same Kashamu rained insults on former President Olusegun Obasanjo in a vicious campaign of calumny. Kashamu’s party, the PDP, sponsored defamatory documentaries full of lies and innuendos against me, General Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders of the APC. Please keep your peace until you make your trip to the USA as a senator-elect. Upon your return we can then have a conversation. We can then proceed with your repudiation of the PDP with a promise that you will stop corrupting and fouling the political system. I am a patriotic, law abiding Nigerian and my achievements make me world-renowned. I am a global citizen that travels freely to the USA, the United Kingdom and other nations. I associate with individuals who seek democracy and good governance for all. I do not spend time with characters whose values are at variance with societal expectations and laws governing a decent society"

PDP Chieftain says I worked for the victory of APC

A chieftain of PDP and former Governor of Plateau state, Ambassador Fidelis Tapgun, yesterday revealed that he worked towards the victory of the APC both at the state and federal levels during the general elections. Addressing newsmen at his home in Jos yesterday April 21st, the former Governor said the imposition of candidates during the elections by some state governors was what made him take the decision to work against his party.
“I contributed to the success of the APC in the state because my party failed. My party failed to zone the governorship to the southern part and that was the greatest error made by the party. The APC fortunately zoned the governorship to the southern part and it won. Contributing to the APC victory was not because we were gratified, it was not hidden at all; it was not done behind the scene.
We openly said that we were going to work against the PDP in Plateau State and we kept our promise. We are PDP; we are not going out and we did it to the end. So, the success of the APC is on the platform of the PDP and we are not ashamed of and it is good to show people that whenever you don’t perform you will be kicked out.” he said

Zimbabwe begins evacuation of its citizens from South Africa

Zimbabwe's High Commissioner to South Africa, Isaac Moyo says the Zimbabwean government has concluded plans to begin the evacuation of about 1,000 Zimbabweans resident in South Africa following the recent xenophobic attacks in the country.
"Identification and processing of repatriation documents has already been done. It is very sad. Most people do not have any documentation. They don't have any clothes apart from what they are wearing. Many of them left all their clothes and property behind. We are documenting people. This process means that we are giving them some sort of documentation to use upon returning to Zimbabwe. We are organising some buses to take them from Durban to Beit Bridge (the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe). Then they will be taken from Beit Bridge to their home provinces. We would want (the departure) to be as soon as possible. People are currently living in the most difficult conditions" he told the state-owned Chronicle newspaper today.

Igbo leaders a disgrace - Etcetera writes

I don't know why this guy thinks it's okay to say Igbo leaders are a disgrace...shuo! But I think he's Igbo (his name is Pascal Ejikeme) so let's read what he's got to say and tell us what you think.
I was told that every Igboman who heard Ojukwu’s speech after the Biafran war was filled with a renewed sense of pride and hope. A hope that one day the Igbo nation will rise and become a force of reckoning not just in Nigeria but in the entire black world. I have read that speech over and over and each time I read through, I am filled with pride and imagination of how those who heard the words pouring out of the mouth of the warlord himself must have felt. Before going any further, let me recount a little part of what the late sage said while addressing the press:
“In the three years of the war, necessity gave birth to invention. During those three years of heroic bound, we leapt across the great chasm that separates knowledge from know-how. We built rockets, and we designed and built our own delivery systems. We guided our rockets. We guided them far, we guided them accurately. For three years, blockaded without hope of import, we maintained all our vehicles. The state extracted and refined petrol, individuals refined petrol in their back gardens. We built and maintained our airports, maintained them under heavy bombardment. Despite the heavy bombardment, we recovered so quickly after each raid that we were able to maintain the record for the busiest airport in the continent of Africa. We spoke to the world through telecommunication system engineered by local ingenuity; the world heard us and spoke back to us! We built armoured car tanks. We modified aircraft from trainer to fighters, from passenger aircraft to bombers. In the three years of freedom we had broken the technological barrier. In three years we became the most civilised, the most technologically advanced black people on earth.”
Ojukwu, with those few lines, defined the ingenuity and never-say-die spirit God has embedded in the marrows of the Igboman. But my question for Ndigbo is, where has this ingenuity for which the entire world has given them a standing ovation, gone? Why can’t it be used today to enhance the cause of Ndigbo? Can’t we re-enact the same war time feat to launch ourselves back to reckoning again in Nigeria and in the entire black world?
Since Ojukwu died, Ndigbo have been like sheep without a shepherd. Those who we thought could take up the mantle of leadership are nothing but selfish entities who care for nothing but their personal interest. As I am writing this article, I just got words that a senator in Imo State has been discovered as a saboteur working against the interest of his people because he has been promised to be made Senate president in the new political dispensation which begins on May 29. What is it with Ndigbo and greed? How long are we going to kill ourselves? Isn’t it a gargantuan shame that a tribe as populous as Ndigbo can’t provide a single individual that is seen to be credible enough to be elected president of Nigeria? A casual observation of the performances of the governors of the south eastern states will reveal their level of under-performance since 1999. Case point, take Aba which has failed to enjoy any meaningful development since the 1929 Aba women riot. The place is a total mess. What have the governors done with what has been accruing to the state in the last 16 years of democratic rule? The fact that these individuals who have mismanaged fortunes of the state consider themselves fit to even contest election is a slap on the faces of Ndigbo. Ndigbo, are we cursed? The red-cap goons known as Ohaneze do nothing but crawl from one place to another offering themselves for sale and for use. This has been their money-making scheme for too long and it can no longer hold water. Can’t we take a cue from the style Dangote adopted and made a kill? The Yoruba have already adopted it and it is working. We have to restrategise to become that economic power house we crave. The idea that every Igboman who makes money whether through his ingenuity or by accident becomes misguided and begins to push for political office even though they are clearly not professional politicians should be discarded.
We hear of Dangote, the Dantatas, Otedola, Mike Adenuga, the Okoyas, where are the Igbo equivalent in terms of their organisational set-up? Most of our businesses are largely one-man businesses and whenever the founder dies, the whole thing dies. Ndigbo must do away with their selfishness and personal greed, otherwise we will continue to languish as a people. We must redirect our thoughts away from the deeply engrossed notion of “to make it in life,” “we must make money at all cost.” What Ndigbo should learn from the just concluded elections is that without a harmony of opinion, all our efforts will yield nothing. Igbo kwezuenu.

Meet the South African king whose remarks launched the Xenophobic attacks

Zulu King Godwill Zwelithi's utterances on March 23rd launched the Zenophobic attacks in South Africa and he had refused to apologize, even after finding out that his people have maimed, killed and destroyed businesses belonging to black foreigners. He's still insisting that foreigners should go back to their countries but tried to save face by saying attacking the foreigners is not how to chase them away. He wants the government to do it legally.

During a speech last month, Zwelithini called for the deportation of foreign nationals living in the country, saying it was unacceptable locals were being made to compete with people from other countries for the few economic opportunities they had available. King Zwelithi said "foreigners must pack their bags and go home".

His three major complaints and why he wanted foreigners to go were; 1. SA traders in the townships said they could not compete with the prices that foreign-owned businesses were selling their products. 2; foreigners involved in crime. 3. Lack of respect shown by foreigners to locals.

Addressing Pongolo community members during a moral regeneration event, Zwelithini accused government of failing to protect locals from the “influx of foreign nationals”. He said;
“Most government leaders do not want to speak out on this  matter because they are scared  of losing votes.  As the king of the Zulu nation, I cannot tolerate a situation where we are being led by leaders with no views whatsoever.
“We are requesting those who come from outside to please go back to their countries. The fact that there were countries that played a role in the country’s struggle for liberation should not be used as an excuse to create a situation where foreigners are allowed to inconvenience locals. I know you were in their countries during the struggle for liberation. But the fact of the matter is you did not set up businesses in their countries."
His comments were widely condemned with the SA DA describing it “highly irresponsible' 'Particularly given the recent spate of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, he should do the right thing – retract and apologise,”

He didn't and his spokesman went on record to say the King had nothing to apologize for, that he meant every word he said.
“I think the people who’re complaining are misinterpreting his speech. He didn’t say foreigners must be attacked or harassed. The king was talking about foreigners who are here illegally. Some are involved in serious crimes like drug and human trafficking. We don’t need such people in our country so the king is right.” His spokesman said
After the killing spread across different cities, the king has relented a little and is planning to speak to his people this Monday in an effort to quell the attacks. He's expected to address the public directly and clarify his statement and ask his people to stop the violence which his words started...

Chibok girls kidnapped to present GEJ's govt as incompetent- Doyin Okupe

Below is what the presidential Spokesperson shared this morning on his Facebook page...
One of the reasons the Chibok girls were kidnapped was to present Jonathan's administration as incompetent and hold it to ransom against 2015 elections.
One of the reasons the BBOG was formed was to sustain and internationalise the embarrassment. One of the reasons President Jonathan lost the election was a national and international conspiracy predicated on this carefully choreographed and assiduously sustained perception.
One of the issues that will be in the hand over notes will be the missing girls.
What is reasonable and expedient for well meaning men and women of good conscience is to dialogue with the incoming administration on what best new approach to employ to find and rescue the chibok girls.
Not much can be achieved, except mischief, by continuing to flog this administration on this matter.
I REST MY CASE.

Video: Maid in Nairobi caught on camera breastfeeding boss's baby

A newly employed maid in Kenya identified as Grace Mwikali Mwema has been arrested by the Kenyan police after she was caught on camera breastfeeding her boss's 9months old baby.

In the video which was aired on Kenya's Nairobi news, the nanny, who is a mother of a three month old child, is seen offering her breasts to the baby who sucked for a few seconds and then refused to continue. Seeing that the child was no longer cooperating, the house help dropped the child to play.

The child's mum had installed a nanny camera in her home to monitor the maid she'd employed just two days before the incident. She said when the nanny was confronted, she first claimed that the baby was the one playing with her breast but later admitted when she was told she'd been filmed doing the unnatural act. The woman called the police who arrested the maid and later posted the video to her Facebook page. See the video after the cut...
